How to cut a sprite sheet into frames

  1. Drop your sprite sheet, tileset or icon sheet above
  2. Set rows and columns to match the frames on the sheet
  3. For animation, keep equal cells. For loose sprites, turn on Trim empty space
  4. Turn on Make background transparent if the sheet has a solid background
  5. Download the ZIP. Frames are numbered in reading order

Equal frames or trimmed sprites?

Animation frames should keep the exact same cell size, so the character stays in place when the frames play. Keep Trim empty space off, and the sheet is cut into identical cells.

Loose sprites such as items, icons or props are easier to use trimmed. Turn on Trim empty space to crop each sprite to its content. Add Same size for all to center them on equal canvases again.

Tips for game engines

  • Name frames with a prefix such as walk_ to get walk_1.png, walk_2.png… which Unity, Godot and GameMaker sort correctly.
  • Use Target size to scale frames, for example to 64 px. Pixel-art sheets look best at the original size or an exact multiple of it.
  • Need the opposite? The sprite sheet maker packs separate frames back into one sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about the sprite sheet cutter tool.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. Export as PNG or WebP and transparent pixels stay transparent.

My sheet has a solid color background. Can I remove it?

Yes. Turn on Make background transparent. It removes the background color around each sprite, and the tolerance slider controls how similar a color must be to count as background.

Can I cut frames with uneven sizes?

Yes. Drag the red lines to match the frame borders, or click a frame to crop it by hand.

Is there a limit on the number of frames?

You can use up to 20×20 = 400 frames per sheet.
