How to view and remove EXIF data

  1. Drop one or more photos above. JPG files from phones and cameras contain the most data
  2. Click a photo to see its camera, settings, date and GPS location
  3. Photos with a location are marked GPS. Open the spot in Google Maps
  4. Click Download clean photo to save a copy without any metadata

Why remove metadata before sharing?

Photos from phones and cameras store hidden EXIF data: the camera model, the exact date and time, and often the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. If you post such a photo on a forum, marketplace or blog, anyone can download it and see where you live or work.

Some social networks remove this data when you upload, but many websites, email attachments, messaging apps (when sending as a file) and cloud links keep it.

Lossless cleaning

For JPG and PNG, the tool removes the metadata blocks directly from the file, without re-compressing the image, so the picture is bit-for-bit identical. Color profiles are kept so colors look the same.

A JPG with an orientation tag is re-saved at high quality, so it still displays upright after the tag is removed. WebP files are re-saved the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about the exif viewer & remover tool.

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is information that cameras and phones store inside a photo: camera and lens model, exposure settings, date and time, and often the GPS location.

Does removing EXIF reduce quality?

Not for JPG and PNG: the metadata is removed without touching the image data. Only rotated JPGs and WebP files are re-saved, at 95% quality.

Why does my photo show no EXIF data?

Screenshots, edited images and photos downloaded from social media usually have no EXIF, because the app removed it.

Are my photos uploaded to read the data?

No. The data is read and removed in your browser. Your photos never leave your device.
